part i -- arrival
Asleep in her bed, Kaylee dreamed that she was kayaking on a broom down the English channel with a horde of talking mice that constantly told her to slow down or speed up, depending. Quite suddenly she awoke, for no particular reason. Her dorm was dark, the other girls fast asleep. There were no windows in the Hufflepuff basement-dorms but if Kaylee had to take a guess, it was probably still dark outside. It was past curfew and she wouldn't have to be awake for several more hours.
Kaylee sat up in bed, a chill racing down her spine. Shaking it off, she redid the ponytail in her hair. She heard the rustle of papers and froze. A sudden, strange feeling of illness swept over her, and fell back onto her pillows. She had woken up to fast, perhaps, her muscles were upset, she--
She was falling, she thought. She tried to roll out of her bed, yelping as she did, but couldn't find her legs. It was almost like the sensation one got from a portkey-- yet not at all. She felt as though she were falling forever but it went as quickly as it came. Kaylee stumbled as she suddenly found herself upright, crashing to ground with a moan. She rolled as she heard shouts all around her.
It took her mind a moment to process what her eyes and ears were telling her. She was in Diagon Alley. As an explosion rocked the alley, she scrambled backwards just in time to avoid being trampled by the people running around in the chaos. A few people glanced at her-- a small ginger girl in bright blue pajamas decorated with stars staring wildly about.
How was she in Diagon Alley? was all she could think. She had been in her bed at Hogwarts just moments ago. Had she grabbed some sort of port key without knowing it? But it hadn't been like that-- and wasn't it nighttime? The clouds above her were dark but it was still clearly daytime. It just wasn't possible!
